Live at RED EARTH 2009!

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

Well it’s not exactly live but the first day of the Red Earth Festival was a blast! It has been a long nine years since I last participated as an exhibitor so I went with no expectations, just wanted to soak in the atmosphere of wall to wall people.

The Longest Parade I’ve Never Seen…

Gabrielle and the girls, Aysia & Brianna, were part of the celebrity lineup in the parade that jump-started the Festival. I had it all planned out, drop off the family at 9 am and run a couple of errands before the 11 o’clock official opening of the exhibit area. Everything was going smoothly until I returned to the Cox Convention Center, and then I found out I couldn’t get into the building…all the streets were blocked off. So I drove around until the parade ended (about 11:30) but the streets remained blocked off for at least 30 more minutes which meant I didn’t actually make it to my booth until after 12 noon.

“How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You…”

A host of new artists that I’m meeting for the first time are gracing the festival but the sea of familiar faces are warming my heart to no end. It is so wonderful to see some of those beautiful smiles, shaking hands, embracing warm hugs, and even stealing a few kisses has made this “apple pie” an ala mode. I cannot even begin to list some of those people (I wouldn’t be able to finish this blog in time to attend the rest of the festival). Come on out and see for your self! Don’t forget to print your Padilla of San Felipe coupon for a free print at Red Earth (see us at booth # 816).

A Live Demonstration:

Saturday will tend to be the busiest day at the festival but I always enjoy allowing guests view me creating the newest piece. I have prepared to paint, construct and finish a 4’x6’ panel with added pieces by Sunday afternoon. They may think I may be doing it for their pleasure but actually I’m working on a piece for the Art In Living Art Walk at Tahlequah next weekend. Hint: I’ll be displaying my artwork at the Iguana Café, 500 N. Muskogee Ave, come for a nice repast and conversation with a delicious ambience setting.

We are excited about it more so this year because Fernando will debut his newest original works at the Art Show, and, Gabrielle will make her appearance as the reigning Little Miss Oklahoma City during the Red Earth Parade as well as with the multitude of dancers & singers during Grand Entry for the dance competition. You don’t want to miss one day of this tremendous gathering, all activities are indoors except for the parade which winds its way through the business section of downtown Oklahoma City. For more information than I can give you please go to www.redearth.org and download on the latest news pertaining to this years’ festival. We have been connected to this outstanding organization since the first year 1986. We are looking forward with great anticipation to be featured with so many other outstanding Native Americans, whose talents and gifts will be shared with every guest and visitor.

The Changing Winds Cultural Society

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

The Changing Winds Cultural Society sponsors the annual Miss Indian, Jr. Miss and Little Miss Indian Oklahoma City Competition since 1992. Shirley Wapskineh adamantly insists that it has never been a beauty pageant; its intent is to show the potential talent of young ladies and girls in their Native American culture & attire. Applicants from around the Oklahoma City metro and communities are invited to participate in several categories pertaining to cultural talents. And upon winning as an Oklahoma City Princess, are required to be the exemplary representative of Native American excellence and grace to events Indian and non-Indian.

We have allowed two of our daughters to take part in this particular event. Sara Don was a contestant twice; coming in Second Runner Up in the Little Miss 1998.

This was Gabrielle’s first time as a Little Miss contestant. She really put a lot of effort into learning her Tribal Greeting in Chickasaw. Since she represents several tribal groups: Chickasaw, San Felipe Pueblo, and Navajo, she’s seems to grasp the differences. Admittedly, we have not attended significant number of Pow-Wow events for our children to understand everything, but they are all drawn to the striking colorfulness, attracted by the enticing music and festive dancing. Even our four year old has been speaking Chickasaw tribal greetings spontaneously.

We want to express our thanks to the entire Committee members of Changing Winds Cultural Society for their devotion to keep the mission intent focused and exciting. We are looking forward to more adventures and opportunities through Gabrielle’s selection as Little Miss Indian Oklahoma City 2009-2010.

Keep your eyes and ears open to more postings of both Fernando and Gabrielle’s appearances and events through this website as we continue to improve the communication avenues for these two gifted individuals.

February 21, 2009

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

It’s been awhile since my last blog post so I thought an update would be nice. The art related events for us have slowed down some although I know there are plenty of events out there. However, last evening we had been invited to speak and share with the Oklahoma City Indian Art Club, the event took place at the Rink Art Gallery in Bethany, host was Bruce Saunkeah. This amazing group hosts a monthly gathering of art patrons, collectors, and supporters within a different location setting and with various speakers and demonstrators of Native American cultures. I first met this group at Barry Turners house in 1985, and without the friendships and support from that integral circle I probably would not have accelerated in recognition for my artistic endeavors as I have. So an opportunity to share my newest endeavors with them was an important reconnecting feature, the invitation to meet and speak with them was heartily accepted back in October 2008. Stefani and I thoroughly enjoyed the evening.
At least three more Art in Worship possibilities are in the works, although Eufaula 1st UMC definitely wants a Pentecost Sunday event, May 31, 2009.

Happy New Year

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

Happy New Year! Amazing, simply amazing is what I have to say about having another opportunity for new beginnings this year. My prayer for one and all is that health and healing flows throughout every fiber of your life as we come to face new or “renewed” challenges in our journeys. That strength from Christ’s sacrifice floods hearts, minds, bodies, spirits, and relationships that have needed healing for such a long time; and that peace would settle down all around us, like the soft mist of God’s presence.

Its funny sometimes when I hear some one talking about needing changes in their life, wanting things to be better, what they really didn’t expect was for things to not be the same. What I’ve learned from praying to be a better person is that it’s no one else’s responsibility to make things better but me, with all the resources provided through Christ. When we pray “God help me be the person you want me to be” that means I’m allowing the discovery of the unnecessary negative behaviors and demeaning destructive patterns that have confined and defined who I have been at the times when I know I could have had better control of me. It means allowing God’s Holy Spirit to re-teach us all about what love means through us, through others throughout our journey.

But I’m sure you already knew all that I just felt like reminding us that we are not alone in this big old world, I’m here, you’re here and we both need each other, and if I haven’t told you lately I tell you now…I love you in the name of God, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Have a great year!

p/s: I apologize for the delay in getting the latest video up on the website, we are trying to download/upload or whatever, but so far it “ain’t” working just yet. I’ll let my wife handle that one she loves those types of challenges. Give us a good word from your heart, we’ll be glad to receive it.

Update! New home phone number (405) 603-3691.

Did You See Christ?

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

We were wonderfully received at Mayfair Heights UMC yesterday morning for our participation in Sunday worship. Of course sweating bullets for no reason at all seems to be my occupation. I pulled off my part much better through pre-planned praying. Plus the use of thumbnail sketches for each painted panel to keep me targeted, and believe me I put my confidence in those thumbnails. The only concern not resolved until I stood up to begin painting was “what two colors am I going to use?” (I had decided to use only two colors for the added features).

The six seasons of the church year (Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter & Pentecost) were segmented throughout the service with plenty of awesome assistance from the worship planning committee: several scripture/narrative readers, candle lighters, musicians, the Pastor and even the congregation related words and music pertaining to each season while my six correlating panels received additional artistic renderings. Rev. Bob Younts had shared his script with me several weeks in advance, and it was from that script that key words and images brought about the painted panels. Each panel received a sectioned image of the face of Christ, outlined in black and accented with the gold color, however it was not until the conclusion of the worship portion that all panels were placed together in their respective placement that the entire face of Christ could be seen, with enough of the original painted panels showing through to show the “mosaic” presence of Jesus throughout our life seasons. It also showed me how every one who participated in one way or another made what we saw and felt as the working of God’s grace and Spirit bringing all our “pieces” together as one mosaic body of Christ.

I was very impressed by how the “flow” flowed, I never felt rushed for more time, a few mistakes, here and there, went un-noticed by the congregation and before asking how much time in the service remained, we came to the end—and I was about as done as I could have been.

Not only were we there to share during worship but it was an opportunity to

see friendly and familiar faces, that was such a blessing for us. Even our children didn’t put up much of a fuss except maybe Emmanuel, when during the Children’s Time he spotted Daddy over in the painting corner and escaped from the loving embrace of the person watching him and ran to wrap himself around Daddy’s leg. He reluctantly and somewhat noisily went back to the nursery with the rest of the children. Well, eventually Mom had to rescue the nursery worker from Manny’s unhappiness.

Our many thanks to the Pastor Rev. Robert Younts and Congregation at Mayfair Heights United Methodist Church for making our second Art in Worship such a blest event, we’ll be visiting with you from time to time but we’ll hold you up in our thoughts and prayers all the time.
